More MOTU Origins

Hi there. Today we’re going to take a look at some newish Masters of the Universe Origins figures. There’s no need to worry you if this isn’t something you’re interested in, though, because I’ll have a full GI Joe review for you on Thursday.

Masters of the Universe Origins Mini-Reviews

Masters of the Universe Origins Clamp Champ and Fisto

I’m still really enjoying MOTU Origins. The figures perfectly capture the savage sci-fi weirdness of the brand, but they add some extra layers. The modular body parts and armor are great. I love making dumb ‘custom’ figures and swapping parts around. I also love how these toys feel in hand– they’re just solid, sturdy, and fun. I also think they have the perfect amount of articulation. They’re not like Marvel Legends or whatever, but they still mostly move the way you need them to.

Anyway, here are some figures from the newest wave and some figures that are just new to me.

Fisto

It’s Fisto! He is manly and stylish, but he doesn’t do that Toxic Masculinity stuff. He is a hero, after all. Great head and fist sculpts here. I do confess that I like his 200X look more, though. 7/10

Clamp Champ

CLAMP CHAMP. He just looks so good. Great colors and two fantastic head sculpts. His clamp works pretty well, and he can hold it just fine without falling over, which is impressive. I love the smaller clamp weapon, too. He is an easy 9/10

Faker

It’s Faker! He is exactly what you expect, so he rules. The colors are gorgeous. I do wish he came with an axe or an extra Origins-style He-Man head, but only having the sword is “vintage accurate” or whatever, so Mattel had an excuse to be lazy. He’s still 8/10

Prince Adam

The MOTUO Sky Sled is very cool. It also came with Prince Adam! I am not super attached to the concept or the character, but this is a well done figure. I like the full Alcala-style sword and he looks even better with some head swaps. 7/10

Mer-Man (Lords of Power)

Lords of Power Mer-Man! This is obviously (and by far) the best look for the character. He is whimsical and silly while still being a menacing Barbarian Fish Man. I wish he had a trident, but that’s okay. He is perfect and one of my favorite MOTUO figures. 10/10

Evil-Lyn (200X)

Evil-Lyn, 200X style! This is such a good look for her. She goes great with Keldor and Kronis, too. I’d love a cape or an alternate unhelmeted head, but this is still good. Mine doesn’t have the updated knees but I love her anyway. 8/10

Macho Man Randy Savage (HWO)

Horde Macho Man! I do like Randy Savage even though my wrestling knowledge is not vast, but I bought this figure just for the armor. As it turns out, I really liked him anyway! I’m not sure how he fits with the MOTU world that lives in my head, but he is a solid 7/10

More Assorted Fun

Speaking of buying Randy Savage for his armor, this is what I ended up doing with it:

Masters of the WWE Universe Kane

MOTU Origins is pretty light on Horde figures right now. It’s early yet, and we know that both Grizzlor and a Horde Trooper are coming at some point in the near future, but I wanted someone to keep Hordak company. I really like the Horde, which is why I bought a Super7 Shadow Weaver and a vintage PoP Catra (unopened on a Spanish card when I got her, so her hair is still nice) to hang with the Ruthless Leader.

I figured MOTWWEU Kane was a good choice for a Horde goon– he looks much more like a barbarian robot than he does a wrestler, and I figured the Macho Man Horde armor and arm band would fit him nicely. I was right.

Here’s a family photo:

I also got some more accessories for MOTWWEU Mr. T. He’s easily my favorite figure from the line, so he deserves something special. Several months ago, I bought a lot of MOTU Classics Jitsu weapons from a Chinese eBay seller. Mr. T reuses Classics Jitsu’s armor, so the weapon storage options still work perfectly with these accessories. And, surprisingly, the two-toned orange is a nice fit with the figure.

Here are some pics!

Since Mr. T is supposed to be a blacksmith/weapons mater, I figure it makes sense for him to have some options beyond the Fisto and Jitsu hands. I somehow love this figure even more now.

Signing Off

I had most of another little Funskool figure profile ready for today, but couldn’t quite finish it. I just got out of surgery today and couldn’t finish the bit of writing I had left to do. I’m feeling a little bit out of it.

You’ll get some more GI Joe stuff on Thursday, though, so don’t worry.

I don’t really have any prompts or anything for you today, either. But if you want to talk about MOTU Origins or Mr. T, we can do so in the comments.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Drac!

I am over the moon that I actually own a Clamp Champ now. And getting one wasn’t even that hard! I can’t wait to see what other surprises they pull out. I’m similarly excited that I will actually own a Mosquitor soon, too.

  1. A-Man

The “vintage accuracy” thing in terms of what Mattel is doing is a mixed bag. I agree Faker is light on gear, and the default mostly useless non-gripping left hands are annoying. They were annoying on the 80’s figures to be honest.

My major complaint about Origins as toys is their legs don’t really sit, so compatibility with vintage MOTU items is spotty. That’s a shame.

Obligatory bitching about availability time. The only deluxe figure I’ve seen at retail is Battle Armor Skeletor on a trashed card with terribly off nose ‘hole’ paint. These things started appearing in january IIRC. That’s just ridiculous,

Haven’t seen any WWEternia guys since a lone Goldberg. Walmart preorder sell out instantly. I do want Sgt. Slaughter. Probably won’t happen.

    1. Thanks for leaving a comment, my friend.

I have seen a few Wrestleternia figures at Walmart, but they are always gone the next time I come back. I’ve never seen Goldberg in person– that’s one I’d actually buy. Thankfully, I have some friends who do see them in person from time to time.

And I agree– I wish the legs did ‘sit’ a bit better, but when everything else is so good, I can’t complain all that much.

Both BBTS and Entertainment Earth have been pretty good with their pre-orders, if you ever want to go that route.

    2. Yeah I noticed that with their hips too. Sitting them in the vintage Roton is rough but the vintage Bashasaurus and Laser Bolt they work exceptionally well in. They also work great in the vintage Sky Sled part of the Battle Ram and get a nice solid grip on the handles with their hands.

  2. In all my sojourns to the local Wal Mart, I occasionally see some of the Wrestling figures. But, they sell out really quickly and are never there on the subsequent visit. But, I’ve never seen anyone aside from He-Man and Skeletor from the MOTU line. I think I saw a Teela a year ago when first released. So, the others either sell out instantly or they were never stocked. Seeing as how I find Joes, Star Wars Vintage and Spinmaster Batman Rares and Super Rares, I’m leaning towards never stocked.

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by, Mike!

I think the only figures I’ve consistently seen on the pegs have been He-Man and Skeletor. I’ve seen a good amount of Battle Cats and Panthors, too, I guess. Thank goodness for online retailers.

It seems like the WWE ones are stocked sometimes at the Walmart by my mom’s house, as I see them sometimes and then they are gone the next time. I’m not so sure on the actual MOTU figures. I haven’t even seen a single Revelations figure on the pegs so far.

I’ve been seeing a few more Spin Master figures lately, which is nice. I was able to get the Riddler and Mr. Freeze. But I still need to find Batgirl and John Stewart Green Lantern. It looks like there are some cool ones coming soon, including Harley Quinn and Batwing. It’s a line that keeps on giving.

      1. I’ve been very excited about this line and grab them whenever I collide with them randomly out in the real world. The Lords of Power Mer-Man I am using as a Heroic Warrior as apparently he was originally supposed to be a good guy and that makes sense with that face.

The WWE MotU guys are REALLY hard to find and that sucks because I really want the Andre the Giant and Sgt Slaughter figures due out soon.

      2. He does look kind and friendly, doesn’t he? I tend to see him as a conflicted Evil Warrior, though. He basically has to be on Skeletor’s team, at least in my mind, but you just can’t ignore the kindness and geniality in his face.

I also really need Andre, Sarge, and especially Bret Hart. I’ll take Junkyard Dog if I can find him, too. A few friends have been able to help me out in the past, and I’m hoping they will have the same luck with this next wave.

    1. I missed out on Sting and he is $$$ now. I enjoy the figures a lot, but I tend to like the ones that go a bit more “Eternia” than “Monday Night Raw.” But it is cool that so many of them can pull double duty!
